I'm done... with the plastic smiles
I'm done... with Christians who walk into church like they are walking into a Country Club
I'm done... with Christians pretending they are perfect
I'm done... with churches saying "that's the way we've always done it"
I'm done... with Christians who say healing services in these modern days are fake
I'm done... with Christians who avoid fasting
I'm done... with people who sit in church waiting for the pastor to "bless" them
I'm done... with those who think pre-schoolers are too small to learn about Jesus
I'm done... with Christians who mock pastors that cast out demons in the name of Jesus
I'm done... with Christians who complain about their church but have never given a dime to God's kingdom
I'm done... with people who stand and cheer at football games on Friday nights but walk into church like they are at a funeral
I'm done... with Christians who can sing Madonna's latest hit but can't recite the 10 commandments
I'm done... with Christian fathers who push their sons to play football, but have never taught them to read the bible
I'm done... with Christians who go into deep debt to "keep up with the Jones'" who sit next to them in Sunday School
I'm done... with fake "Christian-ese" on men's lips
I'm done... with deacons who complain about an unsaved teenager wearing a ball cap into the sanctuary
I'm done... with Sunday morning being the most segregated hour of the week
I'm done... with Christians who think they are better because their skin is white
I'm done... with Christians who think organs are holy and drums are not
I'm done... with Christians who say "I'm fine" when really their marriage is in shambles
I'm done... with people who think their past should be a secret, lest they be judged by the church
I'm done... with churches who think worship is for Sunday morning
I'm done... with Christians who have swallowed the lie that we can and should control how many children God gives to us
I'm done... with Christians who don't believe in supernatural healing
I'm done... with Christians who don't believe in the unseen warfare all around us
I'm done... with Christians who believe miracles only happened in the bible
I'm done... with Christians who call on God like He's a cosmic genie in a bottle
I'm done... with American Christians who think somehow they have attained all they have
I'm done... with this "little religion box" that some Christians have put Jesus into
I'm done... with the limits that most churches put on God's power
I'm truly done... no more limits... no more boundaries... no more plastic people... no more playing church...
I'm done. Jesus did not die so His people could play church and be comfortable. How long will we "play church" while there are lost souls to
win, hungry orphans to feed, hurting widows to love, lonely hearts to
mend, and broken lives to heal? There is no limit to God's power displayed through His people if
we could just stop playing church and start
being the church!

I was done for 8 years and the Lord led me back to a group(young group)that need teaching, mentoring, just a lot of love. What a field of work for an old guy!
Note: You are already holy!
REF
...be a disciple
...pray for my pastor
...mentor someone
...start a prayer group
...love unconditionally
...really study the bible
...become full-time laity
...seize every opportunity to genuinely show God's love to everyone; even to that superficial, know-it-all at church.
...reach out to the new person at church and really get to know them as a person
...refuse to let my church become luke-warm in their faith
...etc, etc.
I'm sure that there would be much more change in church if it were a proactive stance instead of a "I'm done with this" cynicism.
May your passion be the ultimate contagion.
But God showed me years ago that the mask I wore made me no better than the Pharisees who looked down their noses at the poor, the orphaned, the widowed and the oppressed. They looked down their noses at anyone who was not "perfect" and "holy" like they were.
Today, I can't wear that mask of contentment, nor that mask of perfection like a modern day Pharisee... I've nailed it to the crossAnd what a burden was lifted when I did! I'll never go back b/c I've tasted what being real feels like. But now, as my life is poured out as a fragrant sacrifice, my heart aches for the people of God to stop playing church, as I did for so long, and start being the church as Jesus did. I don't think if Jesus walked the earth today that we would find Him wearing a pressed tailored suit and tie, holding His big leather bible, and sitting on His favorite pew in church... the way I did for so long. I think we would find Him instead among the poor, the alien, the widowed, the orphaned, the oppressed, the hurting, and the outcast.
This article was not intented to offend, but if it does, so be it... perhaps I'm the only one who has struggled with being plastic and "playing" church instead of "being" the church... perhaps others have not experienced living a lie as I did for so long. If that is the case, praise God!
But as for me, I'm done with playing church... I'm done with the plastic smiles... I'm done with that content box of Christianity that kept me bound for so long... I'm ready to "be" the church and stop playing church... Anyone with me?

It's the Church Christ Himself founded!
Although I understand your frustration with some of people's intolerance, your comments also seem intolerant. When God says something, it has to be believed, and much more importantly OBEYED. But some of your views are very grey areas, which do no-one any good to argue over.
So, I understand your frustration, but God wants us to be outward looking, not inward looking, because it does others good, but it is also best for you. There are some really helpful comments by others, I would suggest you pray over them & let God speak.
What I don't quite get, is that you say that you can write such harsh words because you were once like that & you changed. Well that doesn't make you superior. We're all the same to God, He does great things for us because HE is great , not us. So, if GOD changed you, you have to bear in mind that God can change the others as well. And if they see in you a contentment with Jesus as the only necessity in your life, they might well be drawn to that & away from all the other stuff. I know this a bit of a Christian cliche, but I genuinly am not writing this to be harsh, I do not think I'm better than anyone else & I do hope that you pray things through with God. And although I believe what I've said, that's not the important thing, it's what God say to you that counts, if that's through anything people have said here, then fine, if not & He has other ways He wants to speak, that's fine. Just be listening - not always easy as the better we get at listening, the more our OWN views are challenged.
I attend a local college, and I see a great deal of drugs, alcohol, and sex. I do not do these things myself, but I will never be DONE with the people who do those things. I really believe that God has put me in the school that I am now to be a light. NOT to judge and give up, simply because I don't agree with their actions. Now I know that they aren't Christians, so it is different, but who's to say everyone that attends church really believes? Many of us are seeking.
Meet people where they are at - fake and all
Secondly- when my husband and I got utterly fed up with the modern Anglo-Saxon Christianity that is fed to us in most churches, we found ourselves happy and growing at a Vineyard church. They are not all alike, and we've since moved far away (sadly) but the mindset there aligned with the Bible and the early Christian church more than anything we've ever experienced!
I commend you for adopting, bless you and all those precious little ones you have, but please be careful that you do not allow arrogance to seep in where frustration is now. I only say this from my own painful experience...
It is very informative and has a very good quality in it.
I like it...

Thank you very much for your time.
Revelation 3:15-22
'I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were cold or hot. Since you are lukewarm and neither hot nor cold, I am going to spit you out of my mouth. You say, “I am rich. I have become wealthy. I don't need anything.” Yet you don't realize that you are miserable, pitiful, poor, blind, and naked. Therefore, I advise you to buy from me gold purified in fire so you may be rich, white clothes to wear so your shameful nakedness won’t show, and ointment to put on your eyes so you may see. I correct and discipline those whom I love, so be serious and repent! Look! I am standing at the door and knocking. If anyone listens to my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he will eat with me. To the one who conquers I will give a place to sit with me on my throne, just as I have conquered and have sat down with my Father on his throne.
‘Let everyone listen to what the Spirit says to the churches.’”
"Christians who mock pastors that cast out demons in the name of Jesus."
See this article for why you ought not retreat into the folds of Christians who practice exorcism as a key tenet of their faith: http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/story/20278737/jesus_made_me_puke/print
..."In the name of Jesus, I cast out the demon of handwriting analysis!" shouted Fortenberry.
Handwriting analysis? I jammed the bag over my mouth and started coughing, then went into a very real convulsion of disbelief as I listened to this astounding list, half-laughing and half-retching.
"In the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, I cast out the demon of the intellect!" Fortenberry continued. "In the name of Jesus, I cast out the demon of anal fissures!"
Cough, cough!
The minutes raced by. Wayne Williams was now fully prostrate, held up only by a trio of coaches, each of whom took part of his writhing body and propped it up. Another bald man in the front of the chapel was now freaking out in Linda Blair fashion, roaring and making horrific demon noises.
"Rum-balakasha-oom!" shouted Fortenberry in tongues, waving a hand in front of Linda Blair Man. "Cooom-balakasha-froom! In the name of Jesus Christ, I cast out the demon of philosophy!"
...
The hooting and howling went on seemingly forever. It was nearly an hour and a half before Fortenberry was done. He had cast out the demons of every ailment, crime, domestic problem and intellectual discipline on the face of the Earth. He cast out horoscopes, false gods, witches, intellectual pride, nearsightedness, everything, it seemed to me, except maybe E. coli and John Updike novels. At least four of the men and about six of the women writhed and screamed and fussed themselves into sheer physical exhaustion, collapsing in chairs by the time it was over. Several of the coaches actually had to bring Wayne Williams and the other young black man behind the chapel to subdue their demons.
nope i like everything you said!!
One comment though, don't you think the whole "lie that we can and should control how many children God gives to us" is a gray area? I am definitely anti-abortion but see no strict rule in the Bible regarding family planning.....besides, no matter how hard some people try to not get pregnant they do anyways. Don't you think that God is bigger than this? Overall I love what you posted but I felt this point was more your personal opinion vs. God's principles.
By the way, I have now found an amazing church whose people really strive to be like Jesus. This has been life-changing and I will pray that others who have commented here will experience the same love that I have found through Jesus and through Jesus working through others.
There is no god, grow up, let go of imaginary friends
The real Church is yet to be manifested. She will be gathered when the time is right from the four corners of the earth. Romans 8:19.
Let it be no surprise that the current pitiful representations of the church are not real. The real Church is without spot or blemish because their hearts are purely fashioned by God in love to love as He loves; vine/branches.
The Church of God waits for the glory of their hearts to be brought forth as a woman waits with faith and hope and love for a birth of her child.
Mike
So be blessed as you continue live in contradiction... (it seems to be the way into the deeper life)
its about living a life of love, Jesus never preached anyone into the kingdom, they followed Him there, they went where He went, and He just loved them.
us "christians" have made this "religion" far too complicated. its not a game of questions and answers. its a life.
and what can you do about it? LIVE in this truth! its not our job to save people. we can't. its our job to love Him. and see His love poor through our lives.
Stop making it a game of risk. where we take over the world. its already ours.
I am done spending time with people who think they are healthy.
I am done wasting my time on "christians" when there are plenty of people being honest about their condition and willing to accept help.
While she may be done with the plastic Christianity (as many people are, myself included) we should remember that simply because she says she is "done" with them doesn't mean she is done with the people.
Of course Jesus wants us to love everyone as He loves us.
However, when people are too busy playing church and keeping a plastic smile on them seeking God's will, there is a problem.
I'm done with the plastic Christians, too. But because of Jesus, I'm not done with them. I will love them, pray for them, wish wisdom on them.
I'm done with them, and yet never done.
Couldn't disagree more. Jesus' story was something like, "I'm done ... with church leaders who value their piety over sincere humility." And then John the Baptist's attitude, "I'm done ... with sinners who won't repent of their sins." In fact, go read the book of John. The movie of the same name which narrates verbatim and enacts the book clearly shows that one of the main reasons Jesus was crucified was because of reactive attitudes like yours who couldn't handle Jesus showing up and saying "shame on the hypocrites".
I'm done with people who forgot that grace is given to those who seek it with sincere repentance.
I'm done with people who measure a church by Sunday morning activities and social interaction, and not by the devoted pursuit of an actual relationship with God.
I'm done with people who speak about God, and even pray outspoken to God, and who try to live "good lives" but when it comes down to the power of God and the acts of God and the relationship with God and the dynamic involvement of God they ultimately prove to be going through the motions at best and living a lie at worst.
I'm done with people who genuinely think that God isn't done with these people, too. For that matter, sometimes I wonder if he isn't done even with me. In which case, that'd be totally fair, I let Him judge, but it's not like he's judging us with us being blind to his judging character.
To the extent that we do not humble ourselves before Him, to that extent, we are not equals, and his rejection is real. You guys can keep playing games and convincing yourselves that "everyone's okay". Most of such people are clearly identified as not okay.
If you mean you are done with being those things yourself then great! If you meant what you said, then your attitude in not that of the Lord or of Paul who told us to be gentle in our corrections and to do it with fear lest we also fall.
Your words indicate the possibility of a deadly spiritual pride.
We (myself included) should be concerned with our own short-comings and focusing on improving our own walk with God as opposed to worrying whether someone else is doing things the right way or not. I am far from perfect... FAR.... but I have become more at peace over the years due to God opening my eyes to the fact that others are more open to your witness when you don't point out to them that they are failing in the first place. As the old expression goes, you can catch more flies with honey than you can with vinegar. Just walk around showing the joy you have in your life that stems from knowing God and his Son and most will want to know your "secret."
I for one am not willing to give up and call myself "done" with those that may not be on the right path. If anything, I am more interested in doing what I can to help those if God so chooses to empowere me to do so. Jesus came to bring the lost to righteousness not the holy. Casting those aside that may not be walking in the light of God would make for a terrible world. I will never be "done" with any of those people mentioned in the list. If anything, I am just getting started with them.
I only pray God gives me the wisdom, grace and patience to do his will as he would have me do it.
And let me tell you, He has sent me to places that are GOOD for me and mine...I used to be the queen of bad choices...
When I gave up control the results were truly miraculous.
God Love you all
I am done with...legalism!
If you have seen the movie, or read the book of "Gone With The Wind." The first 2/3rd of the book, talked about the Plantations in the South, and the Farms in the North. And BOTH North and South, owned Slave's. These, for the most part who owned the slaves, were Christians.. Yes, they were Christians! Because they said they were.
The last 1/3rd of the Book, was about the freeing of the Slaves, who were Black, and many of them were the Descendent's of Moses. Moses, was of the tribe of Levi. Now? When were the Black People, free of Slavery?
Much like any book, you need to read it from the beginning to the end. And just like a Last Will and Testament? Only those Mentioned in the Last Will? Will receive the Reward!! These are the ONE'S, who through FAITH - Receive the Promise of the Last Will. They can ONLY receive the Promise THRU FAITH!
Faith was not a word used by the people of the Old Testament. Because Jesus Christ the Son of God, is the Author of Faith. And He didn't come, until the New Testament. The Authorship of the word Faith had a special meaning. It comes in different parts of the New Testament. Faith, without Love?? Is no faith at all. So Love is more important than Faith. In another place Jesus said, "If you CANT Love your brother? Who you can see.. How can you Love Me! Who you can not see?
So Faith? Has nothing to do with your car, your job or anything else, other than, Faith In Jesus Christ who is God!
There are over Ten Thousand Christian Religions here in the United States. All reading from the same Book, and none of them agreeing with each other. Your Relationship with Christ? Is a Personal one. There are no Religions in Heaven.

Way to go! What I have found is the traditional church of America almost encourages that type of thing with their programs, and their lack of discipleship. Change is coming! A bunch of us here in St. Louis are making disciples, truly listing to God and the Holy Spirit and we are seeing amazing things! God is healing people spiritually, mentally and even physically on a couple of occasions. The church as it is known in America is dying, and coming up from the dust is God's true church coming out and coming forth. :-)

I found your comment very interesting...there certainly is change, going away from the tradition institutionalized church. We have to remember that when we read the gospels and acts there is no such thing as a congregational church. But disciples making disciple makers that gather and multiply with a covenant relationship with God and each other, that's what we see! So something very similar is happening here in NY as well. Peace in Christ my friend.

Know a person or persons often cannot change the direction of a church = big burnout. Keith Green sang it years ago we're asleep in the light. Our jobs is to listen to the Holy Spirit, if the leaders of churches aren't doing that, good luck trying to direct the train with the caboose!
The comments on this post are not from the Spirit of God but from the Spirit of this World!
All would be truly amazed at their life with Christ when they stop trying to do God's work and allow God to act through them. They will witness the circumstances present themselves as God sees fit.
blessings
Sure there may be a lot of people who think they are better than others, but that's their problem not mine. We never know what changes may take place in a person's life at any given moment. The church is not dead. I used to judge people by the clothes they wore and the cars they drove. Until I met some rich folks in the church that treated everyone with real class. They used what God gave them and they show their love to others and enjoy their lives too.
just a suggestion......

Ouch, Jo. That doesn't give us much hope, does it? What reason would I have to continue being part of an institution that will "never change"? Are you sure that's the biblical model of church? Moreover, my understanding of the New Testament is not that it treats believers in Christ as prideful, sinful and imperfect - aren't we usually called "saints," "children of God," and "beloved"? Maybe the reason we hurt each other is because we don't accept that central truth of our identity in Christ, our status as New Creations. What do you think?
I see what you are trying to say Erin, but how do you feel about the fact that those people you are loving and praying for and "wishing wisdom on" are doing the same for you??? Any line of thought that brings us to a place where we think of ourselves as "better" in ANY way than other Christians is a dangerous, dangerous road to walk down... though I agree with the heart of what Lorie is saying here, I can not condone the "Christians who" part. That clearly refers to the people instead of the act.
If you dare to see where our traditions come from, check out the book "Pagan Christianity?" by Frank Viola and George Barna. You may be quite surprised how we have conformed to the world through time.
god bless!
and homeless and cooking on a regular basis in your modern kitchen at your church for people that are in need. You will certaintly cause people to change and follow a Christ like lifestyle. Quit Whinning!!!!
i'm not justifying immaturity but even i as a follower of Christ i KNOW that i have lots MORE growing up to do because guess what, i have not arrived! and if there be others similar to me coming together corporately well....that's a problem waiting to happen be it gossip, phoniness, etc. (again, i'm not justifying the behavior.)
so you will NEVER find a perfect set of individuals nor the perfect church 'til Christ' return. so what do you do in the meantime? FOCUS ON CHRIST!
try to resist the utge to compare and bicker (not easy-i've been there, being challenged there still = )
be the cataylst. if you find hard-hearted people...challenge them in their loving by first loving THEM. if you find a harsh people ...challenge them with your grace towards them and others!
show "THEM" how to do it as Christ did.
the "issues" with the church will NEVER go away!! NEVER! they've been and will always be because WE are imperfect and without them we'd have NO need of God. so CHALLENGE "them" with counter-active living. BE WHAT THEY ARE NOT!!
that's the example Christ left for us!
May the Lord bless you and your family
please don't judge us all over this. there are a whole ton of grace-minded Christians who willingly admit their imperfections before others.
Even Jesus had A LITTLE TROUBLE IN THE GARDEN COMING TO TERMS WITH THE COST. IT IS DIFFERENT FOR EVERYONE BUT IN THE END IT ALL ADDS UP TO THE SELF LIFE and dieing to this life. IT MIGHT BE GOOD BUT NOT AS GOOD AS THE SPIRIT LIFE, and this is a life lived with Christ. We are called to do even greater things than jesus. This statement is true because he said it and i believe him able to complete his good work in each of our surrendered lives. ( surrendered life! probably a condition, do you think?)When you sence your self life getting a tug from God dont fight it i have learnt that in the end its not worth saving, loose your life and find Christ try and do it with a little more decorim than i did. I hope the next bit to die i work with him better.it dosnt take any physical energy to get carried away down the river. I can say that God will keep your spirit life alive but cant promise the same for your self life. GOOD RIDDENS ANYWAY AY!

But don't you see the real issue? Look at all of the replies of agreement you have gotten. And I know 100% that this article would get pages and pages of more thoughts and agreements if people were to read it.
See, this need for true worship, a true church, is within us all. That's the Holy Spirit crying out, people. It is Satan and Satan alone that brings this "fake" worship into hearts of so many devout.
I think the best way to battle this is revealing to people that there is indeed a spiritual battle. God and Satan are moving in all of our lives, demons and angels are constantly struggling for souls. A lot of this is subtle, or buried within our human temperaments. Never underestimate the power of Satan, and call upon the power of God.
Religious Fashion Shows
1-3 Now Jesus turned to address his disciples, along with the crowd that had gathered with them. "The religion scholars and Pharisees are competent teachers in God's Law. You won't go wrong in following their teachings on Moses. But be careful about following them. They talk a good line, but they don't live it. They don't take it into their hearts and live it out in their behavior. It's all spit-and-polish veneer.
4-7"Instead of giving you God's Law as food and drink by which you can banquet on God, they package it in bundles of rules, loading you down like pack animals. They seem to take pleasure in watching you stagger under these loads, and wouldn't think of lifting a finger to help. Their lives are perpetual fashion shows, embroidered prayer shawls one day and flowery prayers the next. They love to sit at the head table at church dinners, basking in the most prominent positions, preening in the radiance of public flattery, receiving honorary degrees, and getting called 'Doctor' and 'Reverend.'
8-10"Don't let people do that to you, put you on a pedestal like that. You all have a single Teacher, and you are all classmates. Don't set people up as experts over your life, letting them tell you what to do. Save that authority for God; let him tell you what to do. No one else should carry the title of 'Father'; you have only one Father, and he's in heaven. And don't let people maneuver you into taking charge of them. There is only one Life-Leader for you and them—Christ.
